University of Louisville freshman forward/center Samardo Samuels has been named the season's first BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the Week.
In helping the Cardinals win the Billy Minardi Classic, Samuels averaged 21 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots while making 77.3 percent of his shots from the field (17-of-22).
In the championship game against South Alabama, he totalled 24 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots, hitting 9-of-10 shots from the field and 6-of-7 free throws. His team-leading 18 points against Morehead State in just 23 minutes of action was the third highest ever for a U of L freshman career debut. He was a member of the five-person all-tournament team for the Minardi Classic.
